Jan Kary
Vice President Development and External Affairs
Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Inc.

Jan Kary is a born-and-raised Marylander with almost three decades of professional experience serving the non-profit sector and organizations making a difference in the lives of others. After several years at the University of Maryland and a D.C.-based business school, Ms. Kary headed for the sun and surf in Hawaii and worked for four years in the employment industry.  As director of seminar sales for Walk Thru the Bible Ministries in Atlanta in the 1980’s, Ms. Kary marketed to churches, schools and universities across the country. Returning to the D.C. area, she held several event and marketing department leadership positions at Prison Fellowship, the largest prison ministry in the country, founded by Chuck Colson.  To focus on fund development, particularly in the corporate sector, she spent nine years at Orr Associates, Inc. a DC-based fundraising agency serving non-profit clients in health, youth services, faith-based, and advocacy.

Ms. Kary joined Volunteers of America Chesapeake as vice president development and external affairs in September 2010 to oversee the development business unit and be responsible for the strategic direction of all development activities including fundraising efforts, major gift campaigns, government grants and compliance, donor relations and program revenue expansion. There’s no greater joy for Ms. Kary than seeing a Volunteers of America Chesapeake supporter realize the life-changing nature of their gift – large or small – in-kind, cash, stock or other assets. Prior to joining Volunteers of America Chesapeake, she served five years as senior vice president of marketing & development for World Relief, the international relief and development arm of the National Association of Evangelicals.
